Music in Beautiful Spaces: The Americans - Coral Gables
May 18, 2025
From: 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM
Experience the musical legacy of pioneering American composers in an intimate setting, as the South Beach Chamber Ensemble presents a string quartet performance highlighting key figures. Music in Beautiful Spaces: The Americans takes place on Sunday, May 18 at St. Bede Chapel on the University of Miami campus. Part of an ongoing series, the concert features performances in architecturally and acoustically significant venues throughout the year.
The program includes two notable works: Florence Price’s lyrical String Quartet No. 1 in G Major (18 minutes) and George Whitefield Chadwick’s expressive String Quartet No. 4 in E Minor (28 minutes). Price was the first African American woman to have a symphony performed by a major U.S. orchestra, while Chadwick was a leading member of the “Boston Six,” known for shaping the foundations of American concert music.
With limited seating and a carefully chosen setting, this performance offers a unique opportunity to experience these historically significant works in a space that enhances both sound and atmosphere.
