MUVE City Nature Challenge BioBlitz
Apr 27, 2025
From: 09:00 AM to 11:00 AM
Connect with nature and contribute to scientific research during an interactive exploration of coastal ecosystems as part of a global citizen science competition. The MUVE City Nature Challenge BioBlitz will take place on Sunday, April 27, at Virginia Key North Point Beach Park, hosted by the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science.
This bioblitz-style nature walk invites participants to document the biodiversity of Virginia Key's coastal habitats using the free iNaturalist app. All observations will count toward South Florida's entry in the City Nature Challenge, an international competition where cities worldwide compete to record the most wildlife observations, discover the most species and engage the most participants.
Beyond the competitive aspect, the data collected holds scientific value for urban wildlife distribution studies, invasive species tracking, climate science and other research initiatives. Participants are encouraged to download the iNaturalist app and join the project before attending the event.
Attendees are encouraged to bring water in a reusable container, snacks, sun protection and a face covering. Check-in will be located at the picnic tables at Virginia Key North Point Beach Park, with complimentary parking available at Virginia Key North Point Trails. Community service hours will be offered to participants who require them, with signing opportunities available after the event. All attendees must complete the Frost Science liability waiver included in the online registration process to participate.
