Nature Preserve and Ethnobotany Tour
Through Nov 30, 2024
weekly on Sunday, Saturday
Starting: 12:30 PM
Discover the fascinating world of South Florida's plant life on the Nature Preserve and Ethnobotany Tour at Deering Estate, offered on weekends throughout November at 12:30 p.m. As part of Miami-Dade Farmers Month, this tour invites visitors to explore the Estate’s tropical hardwood hammocks while delving into the field of ethnobotany - the study of how various cultures use native plants. Guided by a knowledgeable Deering Estate Naturalist, attendees will uncover the ways indigenous and early South Floridian communities relied on local plants for food, medicine, clothing and shelter.
Visitors are encouraged to document their plant and animal discoveries using the iNaturalist app, enhancing their experience through citizen science. Guests should come prepared for outdoor conditions, including mosquitos, by wearing long sleeves and pants. This engaging journey through Deering Estate's landscapes offers a unique lens into the region’s natural and cultural heritage, ideal for nature enthusiasts and those curious about the plant-human connection in South Florida.
