Discover the untold story of resilience and self-liberation through an immersive theatrical experience that bridges Caribbean heritage with contemporary storytelling. Oskuneru 2025 brings this powerful narrative to life at The Art Lab at MDC Wolfson Campus, with performances scheduled for February 6-8 and 13-15.
Written and directed by Miami-born, Suriname-raised playwright Sefanja Richard Galon, this production traces the remarkable journey of the Surinamese Maroons through their fight for freedom. The play has evolved from its origins as a Zoom reading during the 2020 pandemic to a full-scale theatrical debut in 2025, including a performance at the Adrienne Arsht Center.
This Black History Month presentation by Maroon Isle Productions offers audiences an opportunity to engage with an underrepresented chapter of Caribbean history. The performance showcases the cultural heritage and enduring legacy of the Maroons while fostering dialogue about shared identity and historical connections.
Maroon Isle Productions, the company behind the work, is committed to creating immersive, culturally significant productions that amplify underrepresented voices.
