Sabbath Queen
This event has passed.
The 28th Miami Jewish Film Festival presents an evening of thought-provoking cinema under the stars at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. Sabbath Queen, a documentary by award-winning director Sandi DuBowski, follows Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie’s 21-year journey to reconcile his Orthodox heritage with his queer identity. The film captures his transformative quest to create a more inclusive Judaism, blending faith, family, and self-discovery.
Through an intimate lens, Sabbath Queen explores Lau-Lavie’s embrace of his drag persona, Hadassah Gross, a symbol of progressive inclusion and spiritual expression. This deeply personal narrative challenges viewers to consider whether centuries-old traditions can evolve while preserving their essence.
Taking place on Saturday, Janary 16, the screening includes an introduction by DuBowski and Lau-Lavie, along with a Q&A session after the film.
