Apr 24, 2025
From: 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM
Discover the historical significance of urban planning principles that shaped Washington D.C. through an expert's lens. Teófilo Victoria Lecture Series: The City Beautiful Movement-Lecture III will be held on Thursday, April 24, at the Coral Gables Museum.
Presented by the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, Florida Chapter (ICAA FL) in collaboration with the Coral Gables Museum, this event is part of the inaugural lecture series named in honor of Teófilo Victoria. The evening begins with a cocktail reception from 5:30-6:15 p.m., followed by the lecture from 6:15-7:15 p.m. with a Q&A session afterwards.
Featured speaker Justin Shubow, President of the National Civic Art Society and former Chairman of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, will discuss how the 1901-1902 McMillan Plan transformed Washington, D.C., creating the iconic National Mall and Monumental Core as we know them today. The presentation will explore how this plan, considered the first achievement and arguably the pinnacle of the City Beautiful movement, reinterpreted Pierre L'Enfant's original vision for the capital.
This lecture qualifies for one credit towards the Certificate in Classical Architecture (Elective) and has been submitted for one AIA CES Learning Unit. Architecture professionals and enthusiasts alike will benefit from this examination of classical urban design principles and their potential application in contemporary planning.
