The Righteous by Jeff Cohen
Apr 22, 2025
From: 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM
Discover the compelling true story of a German industrialist who risked everything to expose the Holocaust. The Righteous, a new play reading by Drama Desk Award winner Jeff Cohen, will be presented on Tuesday, April 22 at the Colony Theatre on Lincoln Road to commemorate Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day).
This YI Love Jewish presentation, produced in collaboration with The University of Miami Miller Center for Judaic Studies, Miami New Drama and Second Serve Productions, features an acclaimed cast led by Tony Award Nominee Craig Bierko (The Music Man, Cinderella Man) and Drama Desk Award nominee Avi Hoffman (Death of a Salesman).
The play follows the journey of Eduard Schulte, a member of Hitler's inner circle who secretly warned the world about the Nazi plan to exterminate European Jews. Despite his warning reaching President Roosevelt in December 1942, no action was taken. Schulte's identity remained hidden for over forty years, and his heroic efforts were unknown even to his own family until his posthumous recognition by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations – a Righteous Gentile in 1988.
Through the perspective of Schulte's American granddaughter, this poignant work examines the moral courage required to stand against overwhelming evil and asks the timeless question: What does it mean to be righteous in a world filled with turmoil and amorality?
The cast also includes Laura Turnbull, Patti Gardner, Irene Adjan, Peter Galman, Chiz Chisholm, Stephen Schnetzer and Dave Corey. A moderated Q&A session will follow the reading.
Admission is free with required registration. Donations are welcome.
