A photographer’s personal journey through three American cities reveals unexpected beauty in everyday scenes and the complex intersections of culture and place. Claudio Nolasco | Translating Place: Brooklyn, Albuquerque, Miami is on view at the Lowe Art Museum from April 30 to September 13.
This exhibition highlights the work of Claudio Nolasco, a self-described “post-documentary photographer” who moves beyond traditional documentary methods to center personal experience and emotional response. Through images shaped by his time in Brooklyn, Albuquerque, and Miami, Nolasco reflects on how geography and community influence artistic vision.
Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood, Nolasco captures the rapid transformation of his childhood home through the lens of gentrification. His Albuquerque series responds to a local tragedy involving the murder of two Native American men by Latino teenagers, while his Miami images—created after joining the University of Miami faculty in 2020—explore how subtropical light reveals the textures of everyday life in South Florida.
The exhibition invites viewers to consider Latin America's cultural imprint on U.S. communities, while appreciating the quiet, poetic moments Nolasco uncovers in each environment. A collaboration between the Lowe Art Museum and the University of Miami’s Department of Art & Art History, the exhibition is supported by several foundations and cultural partners.
