Discover the intersection of abstraction and spatial exploration in Ulla von Brandenburg: In Dialogue, a new exhibition at The Bass Museum of Art, running from September 4, 2024, to July 6, 2025. This thoughtfully curated presentation pairs works by German-born, Paris-based artist Ulla von Brandenburg with a newly acquired ceramic mural by Lebanese-American artist Etel Adnan, offering a cross-generational dialogue on geometric abstraction and the interplay of art and environment.
Von Brandenburg’s multidisciplinary practice spans film, textiles, watercolors and sound, creating immersive installations that reimagine themes such as modernist architecture, psychoanalysis, occultism and Hollywood Cinema. Her work is complemented by Adnan’s monumental 14 × 21-foot mural, Untitled (2023), which reflects the late artist’s enduring interest in architecture and lyrical color fields. Together, these pieces engage in a visual and thematic conversation, enriched by references to the pioneering abstraction of Ukrainian-born French artist Sonia Delaunay.
The exhibition transforms Adnan’s mural into both a central protagonist and a theatrical backdrop within von Brandenburg’s scenographic installations. In Dialogue invites visitors to reflect on the artists’ shared fascination with geometry, social space and the built environment.
