Una Noche con Luis Carlos Vélez

Books & Books in Coral Gables hosts journalist and economist Luis Carlos Vélez for a live conversation about his latest book, Mercenarios. The event, Una Noche con Luis Carlos Vélez, takes place on Thursday, May 8 and will be conducted entirely in Spanish.

Mercenarios offers an investigative account of the 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse by a group of Colombian ex-military personnel. Drawing from years of reporting, Vélez examines how these men—initially recruited under the promise of security work—only discovered the true nature of their mission shortly before the attack. The book questions their level of awareness and raises broader issues around misinformation, exploitation and international accountability.

Luis Carlos Vélez is a Colombian-American journalist with more than 25 years of experience in national and international media, including CNN, Telemundo, Caracol TV and Univisión 24/7. This event offers an opportunity to hear directly from the author about his research, process and the ongoing implications of this high-profile case. Admission is free and open to the public.
