A Hub of Entertainment and Culture
Historic Overtown is one of Miami’s earliest historic Black communities, once known as a national entertainment destination anchored by Black-owned businesses. It was referred to as “Little Broadway” and was home to restaurants, hotels and entertainment options for Blacks during segregation.
One of the jewels in Historic Overtown is the Overtown Performing Arts Center (OPAC), located on Northwest 3rd Avenue. The building is the former Ebenezer Methodist Church. The facade is outfitted with all of the historical architectural elements of the house of worship – Gothic Revival design, flanking towers and a pointed entryway with three arches. In 1988, the City of Miami declared the building a historic monument and provided $3 million in grants for restoration.
Inside the Historic Monument
Once inside the quaint facility, you will immediately feel an inviting warmth. It provides a platform for various special events and entertainment nights. Types of events include weddings, baby showers, parties, receptions, corporate meetings and much more. In addition to private rental options, the Overtown Performing Arts Center features sponsored programming uniquely curated for audiences of all ages.
The 9,500-square-foot facility provides the foundation for a breathtaking special event. With an open floor plan and state-of-the-art culinary kitchen that fills the basement, the site was designed for inspired event producers and seasoned event specialists. The center was designed to accommodate a variety of event layouts in the front-of-house while still being able to host live performances from the stage. OPAC can accommodate up to 150 guests with theater-style seating and 110 guests for banquet, classroom and meeting-style events.
OPAC serves as a source of community pride in Historic Overtown. It is a valuable resource for residents and visitors alike.
