Mariah Brown House
Attractions
Born in Eleuthera in 1851, Mariah Brown was one of the first Bahamians to arrive in Coconut Grove, where she purchased a piece of land from pioneer Joseph Frow for $50 and constructed her home. She is thought to be one of Coconut Grove's first Black homeowners. The location of her home was within walking distance to the Peacock Inn where she, like many other early settlers, was employed before the incorporation of the City of Miami. The Mariah Brown House, constructed in 1890, still stands at 3298 Charles Ave. (Evangelist Street) and was designated a Historical Site by the City of Miami in 1995.
