Attractions
Discover a fascinating array of tropical fruit cultivars and flowering trees at The Kampong, home to over a century’s worth of horticultural history and exotic plant collections. Located on the shores of Biscayne Bay in Coconut Grove, The Kampong is the former estate of Dr. David Fairchild, the celebrated globe-trotting botanist who during his tenure as the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s chief plant collector traveled to over 50 countries, including Southeast Asia, collecting plants to bring to the U.S.
Today, the Kampong's plant collections include tropical fruits such as pomelo, jackfruit, canistel, 23 cultivars of avocado, 65 varieties of mango as well as palms, flowering trees, ficus, aroids, bamboo and more. Plant enthusiasts and nature lovers can explore the garden via guided and self-guided tours. This urban oasis also serves as the mainland campus for the National Tropical Botanical Garden’s educational courses and as a living classroom used by universities and colleges for botany and horticulture courses.
