See Those Famous Flamingos

Hialeah Park Casino’s pink flamingos are not there by accident. In 1934, the park’s owner brought the first flock over from Cuba. Hialeah Park became the only place where an entire flock of flamingos successfully reproduced outside of their natural habitat, so the racetrack’s infield was designated a National Audubon Sanctuary. In the 1960s, the Flamingo Fountain, Flamingo Pavilion, aviary, aquarium and the Flamingo Terrace were added to the grounds, all to honor the majestic pink birds. Flamingos became synonymous not only with Hialeah Park but with all of Miami. Hialeah Park has become a major flamingo source for zoos and bird sanctuaries throughout North America.

A Brief History

When Hialeah Park first opened on January 15, 1925, it had only a single one-mile dirt track, a clubhouse and 21 horse stables. The track was destroyed a year later during the Great Miami Hurricane of 1926, but in 1930, racing enthusiast Joseph Widener purchased the property and spent millions restoring and renovating the grounds. He toured prominent racecourses across Europe and the U.S. with architect Lester Geisler and launched the new Hialeah Park in 1932. It soon became known as the world’s most-beautiful racecourse.

Through the years, Hialeah Park has been a favorite winter escape of dignitaries, A-listers and royalty, including Presidents Truman, Kennedy and Nixon, Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and Princess Grace of Monaco. It’s also served as the backdrop for major motion pictures, like “The Godfather: Part II.” Today, Hialeah Park Casino is a gaming and entertainment destination like no other.
