The Official Website of Greater Miami & Miami Beach
By Dani Guerreo - September 12, 2024
Miami Gardens is home to some of the best Caribbean food you can find anywhere in Greater Miami & Miami Beach and some cuisines that are a little harder to come by in the rest of the destination. It’s a go-to place for fast-casual dining before an event at Hard Rock Stadium or after hitting a few rounds at Topgolf. Here are the best places to eat in Miami Gardens.
Awash Ethiopian Restaurant is a local staple that serves affordable, authentic Ethiopian food. Be sure to bring a friend and split one of the sample platters to get a little taste of everything. Try the Taste of Awash for delicious meat in savory tomato sauces, spiced chicken, and tart and spicy vegetables served atop “injera,” a traditional Ethiopian crepe-like flatbread. Most dishes are served with a side of injera and should be eaten with your hands. The lentil sambusas are also a favorite. Make sure to finish with Awash’s fragrant, Ethiopian-style coffee.
Head to Lorna’s Caribbean & American Grill for authentic flavors of Jamaica and the Bahamas. Filled with colorful décor and offering a refined atmosphere, it’s the place to go when you’re craving jerk chicken, curried chicken, goat, stewed beef, oxtail or fried conch. The restaurant’s flavors are rooted in the family recipes of Ms. Lorna herself and are a true taste of the islands in Miami Garden.
Just south of Hard Rock Stadium, you’ll find Sunday’s Eatery, a little soul food spot serving up perfectly crisp fried chicken and ribs, creamy mac and cheese and sweet candied yams. If you’re up for sharing, they have a whole deep-fried Cornish hen. Owned by rapper Trick Daddy, this small restaurant can get busy, but there’s always the option of taking your food to go. Sunday’s even makes its own seasoning, so you can try recreating some of their soul food at home.
Arline’s Restaurant & Seafood is a no-fuss Caribbean soul food diner that’s worth going out of your way for. Dig into fried conch, shrimp and grits, grouper or catfish with sides of pigeon peas and rice, fried okra, macaroni and cheese or collard greens. Arline’s has an entire section of its menu dedicated to chicken and waffles, and few restaurants have as long of a legacy and as loyal a following for breakfast. Save room for a slice of sweet potato pie.
Yarumba Restaurant & Lounge serves classic Dominican fare with an upscale twist. You’ll find traditional mofongos, fried salami, quibe and “sancocho” (Caribbean stew) on the menu along with some fancier takes on Caribbean dishes, like stuffed tostones. During the day, it’s the perfect place for a family meal, but on weekend nights, the lounge is transformed with live music and karaoke, making it a great spot for a night out with friends.
Located on the west side of Miami Gardens, Di Angelo Pizza serves extra cheesy thin-crust slices in a laid-back atmosphere. Stop in for a slice of pepperoni pizza or pick up some chicken wings before a game. This casual pizzeria offers authentic guilty pleasure dining and a fast solution for lunch or dinner. It even has an extensive list of pasta and salads. Just don’t forget to try the calzones and garlic rolls. They’re the real stars of the show.
Located in an unassuming strip mall on the edge of Miami Gardens, L.C. Roti Shop has a very uncomplicated menu: They serve roti and sides. The rotis are made fresh, and you can choose from a handful of flavorful fillings, including goat, potato, conch, chicken, shrimp and more. You’ll see cling-wrapped balls of dough behind the counter, ready to be stretched out, as well as signs telling you to put your phone away, so you’ll have no choice but to watch your meal being prepared in front of you. Don’t forget to bring cash. No credit cards are accepted, but you’ll be rewarded with roti that’s perfectly soft, chewy and overstuffed in a good way.
