Apr 26, 2025
From: 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM
Celebrated voices in contemporary poetry converge for an intimate reading under the stars in western Miami-Dade. A Poetry Reading with Morgan Parker, Jasmine Respess, & Mahogany Browne takes place Saturday, April 26 at the Doral Cultural Arts Center's rooftop as part of the O, Miami Poetry Festival running throughout April.
This free evening event features three acclaimed poets whose work addresses themes ranging from identity and race to contemporary culture and personal experience. The open-air setting provides an atmospheric backdrop for these powerful literary voices to share their work with the South Florida community.
Morgan Parker, recipient of the 2019 National Book Critics Circle Award for her collection Magical Negro, brings her distinctive perspective described by The New York Times as "a dynamic craftsperson" of "considerable consequence to American poetry." Her extensive body of work includes the young adult novel Who Put This Song On? and poetry collections Other People's Comfort Keeps Me Up At Night and There Are More Beautiful Things Than Beyoncé.
Mahogany L. Browne, the inaugural poet-in-residence at Lincoln Center and recipient of an honorary doctorate from Marymount Manhattan College, will share selections from her acclaimed works. Her books include Vinyl Moon, Chlorine Sky and Chrome Valley, which was highlighted in Publishers Weekly and The New York Times. As founder of the Woke Baby Book Fair initiative, Browne has established herself as both a literary voice and cultural advocate.
Jasmin Respess, a Florida native and Managing Editor of Islandia Journal, completes the lineup with poetry exploring the intersections of Black, Queer, Southern and Caribbean identities. Drawing on journalistic training and the tradition of magical realism, Respess incorporates family interviews and folklore into work that bridges personal narrative and cultural exploration.
The event requires RSVP though admission is free.
