Discover the interplay of form, memory and abstraction in the works of two Maine-based artists. Homebody: Alanna Hernandez and Carla Weeks runs through Saturday, April 12 at Primary gallery, showcasing new pieces that invite viewers to contemplate the relationship between physical space and emotional experience.
The exhibition, which opened on March 15, presents a visual dialogue between two distinct artistic approaches to memory and lived experience. Hernandez's work features intuitive layering of pastel, pencil and underpainting on raw wood panels, creating compositions that probe emotional and psychological states. Her pieces incorporate folding, twisting forms that intersect with areas of darkness and color, suggesting the body's capacity to hold memory and transformation.
In contrast, Weeks constructs abstractions based on architectural and environmental elements, developing a visual language of shapes and patterns that reflects the lasting impression of place. Her methodical repetition serves as an act of preservation, attempting to capture fleeting moments through form and transparency. The resulting paintings reveal the layered, often fragmented nature of recollection. Together, these artists create a contemplative space where material, process and memory converge.
