Apr 24, 2025
From: 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM
Miami's most prominent satirists gather to poke fun at society's ills through laughter and wit in an evening of comedic conversation. Laughing at Injustice: The Art and Power of Miami Satire brings together a panel of humorists on Thursday, April 24, at Books & Books in Coral Gables.
The event features Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Dave Barry, known for his bestsellers and humorous take on everyday life; Andrew Otazo, CEO of ARO Communications and environmental activist who removed 28,000 pounds of trash from Miami's mangroves; Asha Elias, author of Pink Glass Houses and sex & dating columnist for Miami New Times; and Andrew Boryga, whose debut novel VICTIM was selected as a New York Times' Editor's Choice.
Bill Kearney, The Sun Sentinel's senior editor and environmental reporter, will moderate the discussion as the panelists explore how satire can address serious societal issues like "autocracy, kleptocracy, bigotry, idiocy" through the lens of humor. His experience documenting Florida's environmental quirks and "absurd extremes" makes him uniquely qualified to guide this conversation about using comedy to confront uncomfortable truths.
This gathering offers attendees an opportunity to engage with Miami's literary talent while examining how satirical writing serves as both entertainment and social commentary in addressing contemporary challenges.
