Maternar-te
Apr 12, 2025
From: 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM
A contemplative experience honoring the diverse expressions of nurturing and caregiving awaits in a natural sanctuary by the bay. Maternar-te takes place Saturday, April 12 at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center as part of the O, Miami Poetry Festival running throughout April.
This intimate gathering celebrates all forms of motherhood and caregiving across different life stages. Participants will share experiences of raising children and caring for loved ones in today's challenging world.
The afternoon begins with a 15-minute mindful walk along the Tequesta Trail, inviting attendees to connect with the Earth and observe the natural environment. Following the walk, participants will gather in a circle to share stories while enjoying teas made from herbs traditionally used for healing and nurturing.
Under the guidance of artists Gabriela Serra and Maria del Mar, attendees will create personalized clay mugs, engraving them with poems, haikus or phrases reflecting their thoughts on mothering. These vessels will serve as lasting reminders of the importance of conversation and community. The mugs will be fired and glazed off-site, with participants receiving their finished pieces within four weeks.
Gabriela Serra, a multidisciplinary artist, certified Restorative Justice circle-keeper and urban farmer from Venezuela, brings her expertise in exploring relationships between humans, non-humans and the land. Maria Del Mar, a Colombian ceramist with a background in art and education who has studied indigenous practices, complements the experience with her artistic guidance and connection to ancestral traditions.
Attendees should wear comfortable walking shoes and sun protection. Those arriving late may miss the walking portion but are welcome to join the workshop activities.
