Delve into the complex forces reshaping global governance systems during an enlightening forum examining democracy's current challenges and future prospects. The Miami Conference on Global Democracy takes place on Thursday, April 3 at the SIPA II building on FIU's Modesto A. Maidique Campus.
Presented by the Steven J. Green School of International & Public Affairs in collaboration with the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation and George W. Bush Institute, this international conference brings together experts to analyze the phenomenon of democratic backsliding occurring worldwide.
Through panel discussions and presentations, attendees will explore multiple factors contributing to democratic erosion, including declining public trust in democratic institutions, widening economic inequality, social unrest, populist movements, great power competition and the weakening of political structures. Special focus will be given to two critical contemporary issues: artificial intelligence's impact on democratic systems and the growing concern of elite capture.
Beyond identifying challenges, the conference aims to generate constructive dialogue on strategies to reinforce and revitalize democratic principles globally. Participants will have opportunities to engage with speakers and contribute to discussions about protecting democratic governance for future generations.
This thought-provoking event is free and open to the public.
