Embark on a visual journey through the complex history of anti-Black racism in America through groundbreaking documentary filmmaking. Stamped From the Beginning screens Wednesday, April 9 at Silverspot Cinema as part of the 42nd annual Miami Film Festival event lineup.
This documentary adaptation of Dr. Ibram X. Kendi's National Book Award-winning bestseller employs an innovative animation technique that seamlessly blends live action with period-specific artwork to illuminate both well-known and obscure historical moments. The film traces the development and institutionalization of racist ideas throughout American history, guided by the perspectives of prominent female academics and activists.
Oscar-winning director Roger Ross Williams, whose previous works include Cassandro and Love to Love You, Donna Summer, brings his distinctive visual approach to this adaptation. Following the screening, Williams will participate in an extended interview about his career, moderated by Kevin Sharpley, the award-winning filmmaker and founder of CineVisun and Kijik Multimedia.
