Local indie filmmakers capture South Florida's diverse cultural landscape through seven distinctive short films in a special collaborative showcase. Subtropic (Shorts Block) brings together the Subtropic Film Festival and Miami Film Festival on Friday, April 4 at The Bill Cosford Cinema at the University of Miami.
This curated shorts program offers a kaleidoscopic view of regional experiences, ranging from environmental art in Foreverglading, which documents a skate park transformation honoring the Everglades, to urban exploration in Blue Mirror, which reflects on Miami's accelerated pace of life. The collection includes Florida Boys, following photographer Josh Aronson's multi-year project bringing strangers together in wild Florida spaces and Test of Time, chronicling the 30-year history of beloved Miami restaurant The Big Cheese.
Other featured works include the poetic hija de Florinda, examining connections between land preservation and child protection; The Crack in my Heart, an unusual love story between flamingos; and Ask A Punk, which explores how the DIY punk scene provides community for a queer teen.
Moderators Noelia S. Rabino and José Jesús Zaragoza will guide the discussion in this event
