Miami holds the unique distinction of being the only major U.S. city founded by a woman. As legend has it, Julia Tuttle convinced railroad magnate Henry Flagler to extend his rail line and build a hotel in this corner of southeast Florida in 1894, by sending him orange blossoms from her garden while the northern part of the state was suffering through a deep freeze.
