Hailed by The New York Times’ Alastair Macauley as being “at the forefront of all those dancing choreography by George Balanchine today“, Miami City Ballet has come of age as one of the preeminent ballet companies in the world interpreting Balanchine’s choreography. Founded in 1985 by ballet luminary Edward Villela and philanthropist Toby Lerner Ansin, the company has been under the artistic direction and leadership of former NYC Ballet principal Lourdes Lopez since 2013. The Company’s repertoire encompasses over 100 ballets that run the gamut of Balanchine’s masterworks to timeless classical ballet and innovative premieres by contemporary choreographers such as Justin Peck’s Heatscape, Liam Scarlett’s Viscera and Alexei Ratmansky’s Symphonic Dances to name a few.
With annual season performances in Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, Broward and Collier Counties, MCB mesmerizes132,000+ audience members in South Florida every year. Included among the company’s domestic appearances are Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Vail International Dance Festival and a critically acclaimed performance at the David H. Koch Theater, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
Located in MCB’s state-of-the-art headquarters in Miami Beach, Miami City Ballet School provides training for the next generation of professional ballet dancers as well as the highest quality dance education. The school was founded in 1993 and is one of the largest dance domestic training programs with national and international auditions that attract more than 1,300 students each season.
